Daphne odora 'Maejima' soon to open it's fragrant Daphne odora 'Maejima' soon to open it's fragrant blooms.  The scent from Daphne odora travels so well, we often notice it on walks around the neighborhood.

Red twig dogwood really stands out in the winter. Red twig dogwood really stands out in the winter.  This one is a variety called Hedgerow's Gold that has very attractive variegated foliage in summer.  It gets pretty big even if cut back in Spring to encourage fresh new red stems.
Manzanita planted in my son's garden. It doesn't Manzanita planted in my son's garden.  It doesn't resent in the least that he NEVER waters it.  Given to me as a tiny plant by a friend so I don't know the variety but these are the flowers in early February!
It seems there are more birds in the garden in win It seems there are more birds in the garden in winter.  I doubt that is true.  They are just easier to spot with less foliage.  Here a black cap chickadee!
A coral tinged hellebore seedling. I love the war A coral tinged hellebore seedling.  I love the warm color!  I am more careful to deadhead hellebore flowers before they seed than I used to be as it can be a chore to remove the hundreds of seedlings that come up.  On the other hand, with the time and space to grow some of them on, it's fun to see the variations that turn up!
Cheery, tough little winter aconites were buried u Cheery, tough little winter aconites were buried under yesterday's snow but perked right up as it melted.  These grow under a hydrangea that is leafless now.  They go dormant so don't mind the shade when it leafs out.  The foliage is pretty until then.
